Becoming a photographer

It is not easy to become a photographer. Many will tell you that all you need is a nice camera, yet that is the biggest lie you will ever hear. To become a professional photographer, you must first learn about light, the camera itself, different types of lenses and their functions, composition, depth of focus, how to guide people, and how to utilize shutter speed, aperture, and ISO effectively. You'll also need to learn about editing, whether in Lightroom or Capture One, and Photoshop (at the very least the fundamentals). And there's a lot more to learn.

I began studying at the beginning of 2018 while working at an engineering firm, although I had been considering a career change for some time. This modification went into effect in July 2020.

I took a one-year course to learn the essentials only over these two and a half years of study (I wouldn't recommend spending money on basic courses). After that first year, I spent 2019 devouring as much stuff as I could on Creative Live (which I highly recommend). With a little more experience under my belt, I attended a couple classes that assisted me in directing people during photoshoots.

My greatest learning comes through practice, but not by itself. I met more experienced photographers who became my mentors after taking part in a trip photography class aboard a yacht in Ilha Grande (Rio de Janeiro). This enabled me to improve my comprehension and begin putting what I had previously learned into practice.

For those who wish to start studying photography, I recommend watching as much stuff as you can on YouTube and Instagram. Follow and interact with people whose work you admire.

It's also valuable to seek mentorship from photographers in the areas you want to learn and grow.

These are some courses that I recommend.
